OPENING NIGHT FILM: ELECTRIC JESUS
Feature: Electric Jesus (107) USA; Chris White; St. Petersburg Premiere (attending)
It's the summer of 1986. Erik (Andrew Eakle) is the shy, quiet type—but far more passionate than most teenagers when it comes to God and rock-n-roll. His dream comes true when he is asked to run sound for his favorite band, 316—a Christian hair metal band made up of older kids from his church.

After a blistering performance at a church camp talent show, 316 is introduced to a flashy Christian Rock promoter with a plan. Glad-handing, Lord-loving Skip Wick (Brian Baumgartner) wants to take the band on the road—promising the boys a jam-packed summer of paid Christian rock gigs and a shot at making a real record in Nashville. But most importantly, Skip’s offer represents the ultimate chance to “make Jesus famous.”

Complications arise when a woebegone pastor’s (Judd Nelson) daughter, 16 year-old Sarah (Shannon Hutchinson), stows herself away in the band's RV after a church performance in Alabama. Once discovered, Skip must keep recalcitrant Sarah along for the next couple of weeks on the road—which turns out to be plenty of time for the talented girl to emerge as the band’s muse, head-turning opening act, and Erik’s first love.

ELECTRIC JESUS is a wistful coming-of-age music-comedy reminiscent of THE COMMITMENTS, THAT THING YOU DO, and SING STREET—a rock-and-roll movie about a band that never quite makes it. While the screen band’s music is a weird mash-up of 80’s hair metal and Sunday school, ELECTRIC JESUS wears its heart on its sleeve, ala THE BREAKFAST CLUB, LADY BIRD, and ALMOST FAMOUS.

SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP - Creating Your Hook: Interactive Screenwriting class with homework Part 1 (WORKSHOP) Presented by the Tampa Bay Times
This workshop has homework so attendees can get hands on work. Continued in Part 2, Saturday May 1st at 11:30am.

Seasoned screenwriter, script doctor and Film professor, Dave DeBorde, will take you through his screenwriting structure and basics lecture that he’s given in classrooms and festivals all over the world.

Moderator: Dave DeBorde
Speakers:

Dave DeBorde is an award-winning filmmaker whose experience in the industry is long and varied. DeBorde gained his producing skills on a feature film starring Jim Caviezel (“Passion of the Christ,” “Count of Monte Cristo”) working as producer with legendary Hollywood producer, William S. Gilmore (“Jaws,” “A Few Good Men”). The lessons learned on that feature film put him in a position to earn his stripes in 2001 as one of the producers of “The Least of These,” a 35mm short that won numerous awards, including a Crystal Heart from the Heartland Film Festival and a CINE Special Jury Award. DeBorde also produced the romantic feature “Old Fashioned,” which enjoyed a theatrical release for Valentine’s Day in 2015 and won multiple awards after its initial festival run. “Old Fashioned” was hailed as a “bonafide indie hit” after it broke a box office record on its first weekend in release and later ranked as the number one romantic DVD in the country, beating out major Hollywood releases in the same category. In June of 2012, DeBorde directed the feature film romantic comedy “Marriage Material,” which stars Victoria Jackson (“SNL” alum) and Maddy Curley (“Stick It”).

Always expanding the borders of his professional experience, DeBorde was hired as the showrunner for the reality TV show “Soccer Moms of Tampa Bay.” He has been hired to write and produce a multinational romantic comedy currently titled “Matryoshka,” which will film in both America and Russia, with a concentration on St. Petersburg and Moscow. DeBorde also joined the Sewanee Ironmen of 1899 film team as a producer and helped secure $2.5 million from the state of Tennessee for the film, “Iron Men of ‘99.” The Sewanee film chronicles the extraordinary David and Goliath tale of when the football team of Sewanee, a tiny school in the mountains of Tennessee, went on a six-day, 2,500 mile trip and beat five of the biggest schools in the country. He also created the popular educational tracks for the Sunscreen film festival, which was rated by MovieMaker magazine as one of the world’s top 25 most attractive film festivals because of the educational tracks.

When DeBorde isn’t making films, he is working on the educational side of filmmaking, or teaching film production DeBorde is a popular lecturer on the subject of screenwriting and filmmaking. He is sought after by universities and book publishers on both U.S. coasts. One thing DeBorde is even more passionate about than teaching movie making is his wife, and his four energetic kids.

Healing A Nation
Healing A Nation (73 min)
Haiti; St. Petersburg Premiere (attending)
Documentary Feature
Director: Jean-René Rinvil

There is a critical dearth of safe, culturally relevant, and competent Mental Health Services in Haiti, due to lack of social services and mental health infrastructure, lack of affordable resources, shortage of trained clinicians, and shortage of funding for potentially useful psychotropic medications.

The story behind Healing A Nation is about a social worker, Jean-Richard Saintal from the Cité Soleil region of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He suffered what appeared to be a traumatic psychotic break. Richard’s preventable death while in residential care at a psychiatric hospital in Haiti was an outrage. It underscores how many disadvantaged individuals with mental disorders who reach out to the Haitian Mental Health system fail to receive help. In fact, these individuals may face neglect, poor care, and eventually life-threatening conditions.
The film comprises interviews of Richard’s relatives, social work colleagues of Richard, a nurse who had worked in the hospital where Richard sought treatment, psychologists from the State University of Haiti who are part of the UEH SHARE Haiti team, and mental health experts from universities across the U.S., and individuals with mental disorders and their significant others. where Richard sought treatment, psychologists from the State University of Haiti who are part of the UEH SHARE Haiti team and mental health experts from universities across the U.S., and individuals with mental disorders and their significant others.

SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP - Creating Your Hook: Interactive Screenwriting class with homework Part 2 (WORKSHOP) Presented by the Tampa Bay Times
Continued from workshop Part 1 on Friday at 3:30pm.  (You do not have to have attended part one to attend part two).

Electric Jesus

One on One with a Former Hollywood Executive (Panel & Q&A)
Sit down with Sunscreen Programmer Ben Daniele as he talks with former Hollywood Film Executive, John C. Hall (Universal Pictures).

Speaker: John C. Hall

John C. Hall is a film, television, and theatrical producer as well as a published author. Most
recently, he served as Executive Vice President of Distribution & Marketing at Universal
Pictures. His tenure in entertainment has seen him working on the marketing and distribution
campaigns for over 375 theatrical releases, including major franchise titles, Oscar® winners, and
dozens of mega-blockbusters.

Currently, Hall is a producer on several feature films including the fictional corporate heist black
comedy, E: The Not So True Enron Story; the female-driven phycological thriller, Killer; and a
wedding comedy, The Token Groomsman, which he co-wrote based on his original story idea.
Additionally, he is a producer on several short films and theatrical Broadway productions.
Hall’s passion for the big screen carries over onto the stage. He was a producer of “Macbeth,”
the award-winning critically acclaimed Broadway production starring Alan Cumming. He also
was a producer of the Deaf West production of “Spring Awakening.” The production started
with a Los Angeles run which earned over a dozen Ovation Award nominations including Best
Musical. The production then transferred to New York and received multiple Tony nominations
including Best Musical Revival.

Hall’s altruistic side motivates him to serve on charity boards and as a jury member at various
international film festivals. This spirit of altruism is what drove him to both write the book Your
Hollywood Pro: How To Make It In The Movie Business Without Selling Out and co-found Your
Hollywood Pro, a unique non-profit mentorship organization that brought aspiring filmmakers
together with seasoned entertainment industry veterans. . Additionally, Hall is an advisor to
the executive team at slated.com – the premier film finance and distribution platform for
